open.salon.com - San Francisco
Open Salon is the social networking web service of well-known
Salon.com, an online magazine with a focus on politics and entertainment.
The online service is built around user-generated content.
I worked
with the Vice-president of New Projects as the user experience
designer, helping him to define his vision for this new service,
and developing the user interface and graphics. Some of my tasks included organizing
complex information into a simple information architecture; designing interfaces
for users to sign up, upload and manage their content (images and text);
figuring out intuitive ways to view and present options; and defining overall
process flows.
To the left are two of many wireframe-like designs I completed. The "Profile
Edit Page" is for the engineers to show how some of the fields would be
presented to the user for dynamic update via AJAX.
The Profile Survey document is a comparative review of how other social networking
services handled member profiles.
